Hyderabad, September 4: Rich tributes were paid to former Attorney General Mr Ghulam Hussain Essaji Vahanvati at a condolence meeting organised by the All India Minorities Forum here on Thursday.
Deputy CLP leader in Telangana Legislative Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir, Supreme Court Advocate Aijaz Maqbool, academician Zafar Jaweed, AMU Old Boys Association Vice-President Shahed Hussain, Mir Akbar Ali Khan, Ghulam Yazdani, Jabir Patel, Malik Motasim Khan, Syed Wajid Hussain and other leaders participated in the meeting which was presided by Asif Pasha.
In his speech, Shabbir Ali lauded the role played by Mr Vahanvati in successfully defended the case of 4% Muslim reservation in Andhra Pradesh in the Supreme Court. He said although the presence of an Attorney General was not required in the Supreme Court in a case related to State Government, Mr Vahanvati argued the case in the apex court and it was due to his effective argument that the Court allowed the continuance of 4% Muslim reservation till the final judgment. He recalled the interactions that he had with Mr Vahanvati with regard to the Muslim reservation case. He described him as a polite and courteous personality.
Shabbir Ali also said that Mr Vahanvati’s role in the formation of Telangana State could not be ignored. He said it was Mr Vahanvati, who advised that the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill be first introduced in the Assembly to avoid legal complications in future. Following his advise, the Centre ensured introduction of Telangana Bill in the Assembly wherein more than 85 members participated in the discussion. This facilitated in crossing the first major hurdle and then the Bill was successfully introduced and passed in the Parliament.
The other leaders said that the Muslim youth should take inspiration from Mr Vahanvati’s career and adopt law as their profession. They described Vahanvati’s death as a major loss for the entire community.
